Fortune Cookie Follies
by James Mar

"Hey Candice! Look at what my fortune reads!
'Someone from afar will come meet your needs.'"
"Oh boy! I wonder what it could mean.
I think I need an ice cream machine."
"Bea, you're so naïve. Fortunes are just for fun.
I trust them as much as I can throw a ton."
"They're always so general and unclear.
They never make sense, just take a look here."
*Snap! Crunch.*
*Munch. Munch.*
"Well?" Asked Bea, "What did you find?"
"It says... 'You have a closed mind'?!!"
"Kya ha ha! I'd say it's true.
That perfectly describes you."
"I do not! Who writes this stuff?
I tell you, I've read enough."
"C'mon Candice, we'll just open one more.
With these things, you never know what's in store."
"Let's share this fortune cookie, ok?
I pull this way and you pull that way."
*Snap! Crunch.*
*Munch. Munch.*
"This one reads... 'Beware of hogs'??
That's strange, maybe it means dogs."
"You see? I told you these things were bunk.
Whoever wrote that must've been drunk."
"Yeah I guess you're right, that's silly.
'Beware of hogs?' I mean, really."
"Still I think it'd be kind of great,
If we could predict our own fate."
Stepping outside, Bea couldn't believe her eyes.
An ice cream truck stopped by, what a surprise!
"Yay! Ice cream! Just what I needed!
Looks like my fortune succeeded."
"Seeing how both our fortunes came true,
Should we listen to the last one too?"
"No way! Mine's was so phony.
Don't be scared, it's baloney."
That same night as Bea slept in her bed,
Nightmares came and filled up her head.
Pigs, pigs, pigs in the sky.
Pigs, pigs, pigs flying high.
Chasing her up and down,
Left and right, all around.
Big and small,
Short and tall.
Hundreds, thousands, millions, billions!
Zooming, soaring, zillions, jillions!
Bea ran and ran but she couldn't hide.
Closer and closer, soon they'll collide!
At that moment, Bea awoke from her dread,
Relieved to know she was dreaming in bed.
Meeting again with Candice at night,
Bea retold her tale of piggy fright.
"There were hogs of every shape, color, and size.
Pigs running around and flying in the skies."
"If I ever see another hog, I think I'll scream.
Never have I experienced such an awful dream."
Just then, Candice's mom came home all excited.
"We're feasting good tonight Bea, and you're invited!"
"I made a huge order. Hope it's not too big.
Guess what we're eating... a whole roasted pig!"
