OVERVIEW
Giant Monster Takedown! is an adventure series with focus on humor first and action at a not too distant second. It is a show inspired by classic sci-fi monster movies. There will be stories involving giant monsters, robots, aliens, superheroes, a villainous dictator, an evil scientist, cavernous people, pop singers, and all sorts of crazy science fiction characters. The setting mainly takes place in New Town City, a futuristic utopian city built upon a former nuclear test site. Instead of taking place in the 50’s or today, it approximately takes place in the year 2200.
The Lin family, a very unusual family, is the main focus of the show. The family is composed of a mom, dad, daughter, son, a dog, and a robot dog. Bobby is an 11 year old boy and an assistant robotics engineer who likes to create. Amanda is a 6 year old girl and genetics engineer professor who doesn’t want to miss out on a “normal” childhood. Teresa is their mom, a former FBI agent who surveillances her family in determination to run a healthy household. Sam is their protective dad, the anxious mayor of New Town City, a defunct superhero, and all around nice guy. Fuppo is the family dog with superpowers. Fubo is a powerful dog robot created by Bobby.
With the family being so closely involved in their institutions, being caught up in a monster attack is inevitable. Each family member is able to respond to it in their own way. Often times, monsters will be encountered when traveling to different settings like the sea, a jungle, a cavernous underground, a nuclear wasteland, an island, etc… Whether the characters are engaging in leisure or work related activities, monsters can be found at any time or any place.
Even though the setting, characters, and events seem off the wall, the comedic tone should be natural and not forced. The characters’ performances should serve themselves and not the gag. Sight gags are very welcome as well as verbal. Many monsters battles will provide for some great sight gags through their absurd animalistic behavior. The giant robots make good sight gags through personality and high risk wrestling moves. If there is any room for drama, the show should not be adverse to it. It can take itself seriously. Executed well and it will provide for some compelling moments. Executed poorly and it will provide for some campy moments, which might not be a bad thing considering the show’s inspirations. So long as the viewers are entertained is all that counts.
I had submitted this to Cartoon Network in the mid 2000's and they turned it down because they had "too many monster shows".
MAIN CHARACTERS
Dr. Bobby Lin
Bobby is an eleven year old boy and assistant robotics engineer for a robotics firm. He pushed himself to get his PhD to satisfy his parents’ demands but chose robotics to satisfy his own creative interests. Technology and gadgets are his passion. The robotics firm he works for specializes in military projects. To prove himself, he does all the work and innovation for his supervisor but it’s always taken for granted. He receives even less attention and credit from the public because his work is classified and the process stays hidden. Still, making the next coolest thing is his obsession. Designing and testing robots that withstand battles against monsters is an exciting challenge. A big fan of action movies and sports (specifically wrestling), most of his giant robots’ combat strategies are programmed to show off. This means the robot will play around and make goofy moves rather than going straight for the knockdown win. Bobby has a cocky personality and likes to pull pranks. He has fun teasing the people he’s close to or people he wants to be close to but never in a hurtful way. This often leads to quarrels with Amanda, his little sister. An outgoing person, Bobby is a seeker of fun and excitement.
Dr. Amanda Lin
Amanda is a six year old girl and professor of a genetic engineering class. She’s book smart enough to lecture to adults but her sheltered life has left her immature, unwise, and naïve with anything outside academics. Like Bobby, Amanda’s parents, pushed her into getting her PhD and university job. Her love for nature and animals led her to choose her field. But she laments not having a “regular” childhood life. So (to her mother’s disapproval) she enrolled herself in an average elementary school, trying to have “regular” school experiences with kids of the same age. Because she’s so smart, she’s able to miss a lot of classes, shortcut academic challenges, and still get perfect grades. Elementary schoolwork is a breeze but she isn’t a smarty pants about it. Nobody there knows she’s a professor. In her mind she’ll be giddy at how easy everything is and wonder why others can’t understand or solve problems but she’ll never vocally express it. If anyone does know something she doesn’t or if she’s wrong, she will feel very embarrassed. Having the time for regular childhood experiences is a challenge. She enjoys calm recreational activities like playground games, picnics, recreational reading, etc… If those activities ever get interrupted, she can have quite a temper. She really wants to live a carefree life.
“Mom” Teresa Lin
A former FBI agent, mom tries to run a disciplined “normal” family household. Wife of the mayor, and mother of two kid prodigies, she tries to keep the house free of clutter and chaos. Everything under her house is her domain. She doesn’t acknowledge other people’s things as theirs. It’s hers and she’ll toss it if she feels led to. There are many house rules she imposes on the kids. She quit the FBI to start a family and lead a more “regular” life. Still having close connections with people at the FBI, they sometimes ask favors from each other. Teresa’s a mom that wants the whole family to sit down together during dinnertime or be back home on time for family bonding. She is very interested in knowing where the other members of her family are, what they are doing, when they are doing it, and who they interact with. As a result, she is not afraid to investigate, spy, and pry in on her family’s lives. Teresa is a person who listens for any neighborhood gossip and investigates the lead. If she’s really motivated, Teresa will personally confront and drag any of her family back to the house no matter where they are. Anytime she wants to intervene in another family member’s life she takes charge. She tracks everyone by putting bugs on them and at their workplace. At any time, she is able to listen in on what’s going on. Even though her kids have brilliant minds, she still treats them like her babies. She drives the kids to their workplaces every morning, packs lunchboxes for them, and holds their hands while crossing the street. She continues to nag and demand them to keep excelling in their work. These types of actions can often be a source of annoyance and embarrassment for the children. Teresa has the ability to pop up in the unlikeliest of places. Her everyday personality is an average friendly home making “soccer mom”.
“Dad” Sam Lin
Mr. Lin is the pleasant mayor of New Town City, husband to Teresa, father of Bobby and Amanda. He keeps wondering why monsters, aliens, and robots continue to invade and destroy his city. The constant danger causes him to spend a lot of money on innovative ways to defend the city. Always worried about the town’s image, he wants to develop changes to make New Town City a more attractive destination. In the event of a monster invasion or outside threat, he’ll go through exaggerated emotional outbursts. But after a while, he’s able to regain his composure, take charge, and make executive decisions. Despite being in charge of the city, it’s easy for him to feel powerless against all the monster attacks. In his 20’s he used to be the “Beetle Rider”, a Chinese superhero. But he retired early because he couldn’t compete with Japanese superheroes and was dead broke. Quitting was a decision that has haunted him for a long time. All his powers come from the Beetle Rider suit, something he keeps hidden so nobody except his family knows about it. The full body and head suit gives him the capability to achieve amazing feats. However, when he does transform he’s so out of shape, he becomes exhausted real fast. As the Beetle Rider he feels he has more freedom, having the power to take charge of a crisis that normally would frustrate him as a mayor bogged down by politics. Beetle Rider’s ride and technology are outdated. A slow wheeled motorcycle is his how he gets around during a time when wheeled vehicles are outdated. He drives an old giant robot named “Suppah Loboto” to fight monsters. Anytime he sees his kids fighting in a battle, Sam will feel tempted to change into the Beetle Rider and try to get them out. He doesn’t approve of his kids endangering themselves. Whenever he shows up as the Beetle Rider, it makes his kids feel very embarrassed. If things go right, however, he will enjoy basking in his sunlight. Sam’s out of shape and in his forties.
Fuppo: the Super Dog
Fuppo is the original family dog, a Labrador Retriever, made super powered by Amanda through a genetic experiment. Dim witted but headstrong, Fuppo follows his heart and instinct. He’s a total dog with regular doggie desires such as playing, having fun, eating, sleeping, chasing his tail, etc… He can sense danger before it happens and it makes him anxious. But as soon as something threatens his neighborhood, Fuppo is more than willing to face. Fuppo has powers such as super strength, lightning speed, enhanced smell, hearing, stamina, agility, invulnerability, flight, incredible bite power, and a destructive bark (worse than his bite). He often accompanies Amanda and looks out for her, building a strong emotional bond between the two. Fuppo is a dog that cares for people and will rush to their aid if he is aware of their peril. He obeys any Lin family member and can hear any of them calling from far away.
Fubo: the Dog Robot
Fubo is Bobby’s creation and best friend. He is very loyal to Bobby. Fubo acts like a real dog with enhanced abilities. These powers include: a face laser, missiles, rocket power, robo strength, radar, x-ray vision, and more. Fubo’s brain is a calculative processor with limited speech capabilities. He can communicate with other computers and real dogs with no problem. The way he thinks is through analysis and calculations; by weighing pros and cons. But his behaviors will distinctly remain doggie-like. His processor can be transferred from a small body to giant sized versions of himself. He’s very aware of threats and is very focused on accomplishing his objective. However, in following commands and objectives, it’s easy for Fubo to overlook wanton destruction of his surroundings. He knows the straightest distance between two points is a line. So he’ll be busting through walls and destroying buildings like it were nothing. Bobby can talk to Fubo long distance through a wristwatch, though he takes orders from any Lin family member.
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
Dr. Isaac Honda
“Dr. I” is the elderly head of Martech Robotics and Bobby’s kindly supervisor. He sees robotics, both micro and mega as a benefit to humanity. But he understands the power his creations can have and emphasizes responsibility. He stresses ethics and integrity over the bottom line. Dr. Honda is a brilliant engineer in his own sense but he underestimates the brilliance of Bobby. He always listens to Bobby’s ideas, praises them, and credits himself for having such a wonderful idea. “Dr. I” is a pleasant and charming fellow so he can get away with such things. He gets annoyed when Bobby programs the robots to have odd behavioral quirks like showing off.
Dr. Jane Fukuda
Dr. Fukuda is the intellectual head of the biology department at the university where Amanda teaches. Studying giant monster biology is her specialty. She believes in more peaceful methods when dealing with monsters rather than trying to destroy them all the time. She sees monsters as living beings in a habitat that man has encroached upon. Dr. Fukuda thinks monsters have a right to exist and is an advocate for monster preservation. On paper and in the lab, monsters fascinate her. In person however, she’s deathly afraid of many monsters when they get up close. If she ever has to study a monster hands on, she will get Amanda to assist in close interactions. And on monster expeditions, Jane will stick close to the military escort.
“The Pixies”
The Pixies are multimillionaire Siamese twin pop singers, and owners of Butterflo, a giant butterfly. The eccentric young twins share the same the body and have two separate heads. Normally they both speak in unison and generally act as one. However, there can be instances when they argue with one another and start slapping each other. She/They live in a huge estate and keep Butterflo as a pet, which causes a bit of controversy. But since they’re rich celebrities, they’re given leeway. Dr. Fukuda has an open relationship with the Pixies. She is able to visit and study Butterflo whenever she wants. On one hand she admires the way Butterflo can be kept in open captivity. However, she doesn’t like the way Butterflo is being exploited and put in danger. Dr. Fukuda doesn’t understand the singer’s weird behaviors and radical opinions. The twins use Butterflo to fight monsters and shamelessly promote their concerts. When fighting other monsters, the Pixies can have considerable influence. Together with Butterflo, they can sing different songs causing different reactions in other monsters. If they sing a calm song, they make a calming effect; an upbeat song makes monsters dance, etc… The Pixies are obsessed with their looks and mastering the perfect dance routine. Amanda is a fan of the singers.
Linda Allen
Linda and Amanda are best friends and classmates at the elementary school. Anytime Amanda wants to hang out, she does it with Linda. She’s a class clown and a competitive street smart girl who’s not too good with her studies. These qualities get her in all sorts of trouble. She and Amanda are very open to one another and share their feelings together. Around Amanda, she tones herself down a bit. She sticks up for Amanda.
Colonel Stickler
Stickler is in charge of the Monster Takedown Force and coordinating military attacks. Colonel Stickler is a very calm, straight-faced, and determined character that respects monsters while trying to destroy them. Nothing fazes Stickler. The worst scenario can be playing out and he’ll be disturbed that his coffee doesn’t have enough sugar. To Stickler, the best defense is an all out offense. Wanting to eliminate threats at all costs, he often disregards civilians and their property. He always seeks to pulverize monsters with as many troops, tanks, jet planes, battleships, submarines, rocket ships, rockets, laser beams, and large robots as possible. The attacks don’t stop until the last bullet fires or lasers overheat. In the circumstance that Mayor Lin is absent from office during a crisis, Colonel Stickler takes charge.
Captain Jones
Jones is in charge of the X-3381, a unique military vessel with state of the art technology and advanced weaponry. The ship can travel anywhere; through land, sea, air, and space. Its attributes includes shields, lightning lasers, plasma missiles, a nose-tip drill, hover ability, rocket speed, and more. He’s so intense that he’ll fight until the very end, go down with his ship on fire, and not even blink an eye. His ship can get blown to smithereens but he always survives the destruction. The fearless captain is under general orders to patrol and protect the city. Anytime there’s a military or scientific monster expedition, Jones is there to lead or accompany it. A very determined individual, Jones is so gruff and gung ho that he would fight monsters with his bare teeth if he had to.
Ken Kaneko/Mighty Jet Atom
Ken is a six year old boy and Amanda’s classmate at the elementary school. He’s a foreign exchange student from Tokyo with hidden cybernetic abilities. Created by Japan’s finest robotic and genetic engineers, he’s a valuable individual to Japan’s prime minister and ambassador. He can transform himself into the “Mighty Jet Atom”. Ken’s a novice when it comes to fighting the evil monsters but hardly incapable. Some of his amplified attributes include: strength, vision, jet power, atomic finger lasers, etc... The Mighty Jet Atom still has yet to reach his full potential, however. He’s still got a long way to go in development. He balances his time between schoolwork, fighting monsters, and average kid activities. Ken was sent over to experience and observe first hand how Americans handle their monster problems. He’s not too good with his schoolwork and prone to delinquency. Above all else, he’d rather just be playing video games all day or messing around. He still doesn’t quite get the reason why he was made: as a weapon to fight monsters.
Prime Minister Ifukube, Ambassador Satoh
Mr. Ifukube and Mr. Satoh are Japanese officials who sympathize with New Town City. Occasionally they send assistance in the form of NinjaBot and the Super Sentai Squad. But they really send them in order to protect the Mighty Jet Atom. Whenever they call and talk to Ken (in Japanese) about monsters and such, the host family thinks Ken’s talking with his guardians or school administrators. Satoh and Ifukube always have their eye on New Town City’s happenings. The two monitor New Town City’s events on a big widescreen TV, which they treat like Pay-Per-View whenever something exciting appears. Beer and grill parties are commonly held at their station. They’ll sing karaoke to footage of the Pixie’s concerts.
Super Sentai Squad
Go! Go! Go! Japan’s weird and colorful anti monster force are sometimes sent over to help New Town City fight monsters. Their colors are gold, silver, electric green, neon orange, and plenty of shiny glow. Their fighting techniques are very tacky and exaggerated. Even the simplest of tasks requires a complicated routine. Piloting four vehicles from land, sea, air, and space, they combine to make the NinjaBot.
VILLAINS
Boss Master
“The world is mine, suckas!” Boss Master is an in-your-face rhyming, jive talking gangsta dictator intent on taking over the world. He’s a rapper with a funky sense of style that changes with every appearance. His country, Funkania, is located very close to the borders of New Town City. Boss Master can’t understand why any country would want to resist his charm or rap albums. He always tries to come up with new ways for undermining New Town City’s system.
Dr. Demolition
Dr. D works for Boss Master, but not for free. Dr. D defected to Funkania because he wants the cash money. A Martech Robotics cofounder, he had a fallout with Dr. Honda and wants to take personal revenge on him. He creates all sorts of funky robots, monsters, and military stuff with style. In contrast to Boss Master, Dr. D is a no nonsense character who is often annoyed by Boss Master’s shenanigans. Sometimes he will coordinate his own independent attacks.
Zarians
The Zarians are evil alien women from Venus with world domination in mind. They want to abduct the Earth’s men and turn them into slaves. Because they’re so attractive, most men are happy to comply. But Earth women don’t like Zarians because they also want to steal all of Earth’s expensive cosmetics. The UFOs they pilot wreak havoc on the city. They are the creators of Rella, an equally attractive giant robot.
Citizens of Cavern City
The people of Cavern City are descendants of an ancient civilization living in a cavernous underworld. They are angry at people who live above for nuking the surface. They are a backwards civilization stuck in the medieval ages. Despite this, they are able to live in harmony with many monsters. The city’s guardian is a giant monster called King Digglah.
MONSTERS
All monsters are a threat to the city but when it comes to fighting each other, some seem “good” and some seem “bad”. The bad monsters usually have a connection with the villains while the good monsters are there to stop them. “Bad” monsters make wanton destruction of the city while “good” monsters protect it. Almost every monster is tough to destroy and very missile resistant. Each monster has its own musical theme.
“Good” Monsters
Gilah
A giant radioactive Gila monster, Gilah spews out radioactive green flames and fireballs. He lives in a huge cave on Gilan Island. Sometimes Gilah will rampage New Town City on his own and other times, he’ll protect it from other monsters. On fighting, Gilah stands on two legs and uses every part of his body to cause destruction. Anything he can get his hands on during a battle will be hurled at his opponent. Gilah likes to mock his opponents and do victory dances at the end. When there’s not much more to destroy, he’ll just go back and swim to his island cave. Gilah fights like a professional wrestler, making body slams, jump kicks, suplexes, etc…
Butterflo
Owned by the Pixies, Butterflo is a giant butterfly who lives on a huge estate as a pet. While in combat, her unpredictable movement makes her a hard target. She has a strong relationship with the Pixies and follows their commands. Her flapping wings generate so much force, it’s enough to knock any monster down. Together with the twin’s songs, they’re able to have different effects on other monsters, depending on the song.

His skin is nearly invincible, he can camouflage himself to anything, his tongue is longer than his body, Chameleos is a giant Chameleon monster. Chameleos likes to climb high places and jump off of them, making attacks with his lashing tongue of death. Because he has a flap of skin attached from his arm to the side of his body, he’s able to glide his way around. Whenever there’s a fight, Chameleos enjoys getting a piece of the action. He lives in the Wungle but often makes dramatic appears out of nowhere. He has a rock star attitude.
Super Jag Machine
The Super Jag Machine is the latest experimental giant robot by Martech. It probably is the most powerful and advanced robot ever conceived but also the most unstable and prone to failure. Dr. Honda is apprehensive to deploy it because it’s not even fully complete. So every use is a test run. Constantly being modified, Super Jag Machines is an ever changing robot. The machine is a self autonomous robot but takes human commands. Big, tough, powerful, strong, the robot has shields and many different kinds of laser beams. It carries an extremely powerful laser beam, that expends all its energy when fired. Its tradeoff for being so big and powerful is being slow. Most of the time, it relies on firepower before resorting to legs and fists. At the moment, it cannot fly.
Colossor
A standard giant robot, Colossor is made for the military by Martech Robotics. Colossor is a self autonomous robot but takes human commands. It can fly, has missiles, guns, laser beams. Its strengths are speed, agility, a sword, ninja stars, and bag full of tricks. He also has smoke bombs to conceal his movement. NinjaBot has the ability to shoot its head and limbs at the monster as ramming projectiles. Its weakness is being smaller and not as tough as most robots.
“Bad” Monsters
MechaGilah
Created and controlled by Dr. Demolition, MechaGilah is a mechanized version of Gilah. It looks and sounds just like Gihah even down to the same abilities. Once MechaGilah’s outer skin gets blown off, his mechanical nature is more apparent. It’s a no nonsense robot that has lasers, energy beams, missiles, rocket power.
FunkBot 3000
A giant robot controlled by Boss Master, created by Dr. Demolition. He’s a humanoid robot with an attitude like no other, a dancing machine that’s got the moves and a changing sense of style.
